Coinciding with a
number of International Education Week activities, Uruguayan
Public School No.178 celebrated the one year anniversary
of its naming after the American civil rights leader Dr.
Martin Luther King, November 18, 2005. The school is in
one of Montevideo's poorest areas and enrolls over 300 children
from needy families.
To celebrate the occasion,
the children presented a colorful pageant on the history of
the people of African descent in Uruguay, and gave readings
on the life of Dr. King. The U.S. Embassy's Public
Affairs officer Linda Gonzalez was invited to attend, accompanied
by Assistant PAO Thomas Hamm.
The U.S. Embassy Montevideo
has in the past provided assistance to this school, donating
books and computers. On this occasion the Embassy donated
a digital video camera and projector.
The students gave the
U.S. Embassy representatives bookmarkers with the words
of Martin Luther King, “If you help only one person
to have hope, you would not have lived in vain”.
