Homeless shelter receives mini bus donation The Center for the Promotion of
Human Dignity (Ceprodih) will use the vehicle to transport needy
mothers and children

Every day, the Center
for the Promotion of Human Dignity (CEPRODIH) needs to transport
approximately 20 mothers and 50 children who spend their
nights in various shelters around the city of Montevideo
to CEPRODIH's day center where they receive specialized
care and training to assist them obtain jobs and housing.
To date, CEPRODIH did not own any means of transportation,
and had to rely on inadequate and expensive ramshackle services.
FONDAM (Fondo de las
Americas), a local non-profit organization aimed at promoting
the improvement of children survival and development, arranged
for the donation of a passenger van for CEPRODIH. FONDAMs
are established as part of a debt reduction agreement between
the various governments and the United States. They promote
the preservation, protection and administration of natural
and biological resources in a sustainable and environmentally
healthy manner.
The mini bus was officially
handed over November 17, 2005, at a small ceremony held
in CEPRODIH's shelter for the homeless. FONDAM-Uruguay representatives
Nelly Arispe and Alvaro Mendi, along with the U.S. Chargé
D'Affaires James Nealon and CEPRODIH's president Alejandro
Borche proceeded to sign the necessary documents. "Our
goal is to be able to safely transport homeless mothers
and children to our day care center. The bus would also
help to further development of the children through educational
and recreational activities at schools, cultural events
or parks," stated CEPRODIH's director Adriana Abraham.
CEPRODIH, a Non Governmental
Organization (NGO), is a civilian non-profit association
whose aim is to care for and help homeless people. Founded
in June 2000, it is Uruguay's first center for day care
of homeless mothers and their children. Since then, hundreds
of families have been helped with their job training and housing needs. CEPRODIH is financed by some state organizations
and personal contributions.
During
a small ceremony held at CEPRODIH's shelter
for the homeless in Montevideo, representatives
of FONDAM-Uruguay announce the donation of a
mini bus for the shelter.
