For the past four years, the Department of State, in cooperation with the Association of American Holocaust Organizations (AHO) in New York, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. (USHMM), has organized a series of Summer Teacher-Training Programs in the United States to foster Holocaust education. To date this initiative has brought to the U.S. more than 100 teachers from some 14 different countries.

Through this program, participating teachers are exposed to new and different methods of teaching the Holocaust, and, by interacting with each other and with American participants, they are also able to gain new perspectives on the challenges of teaching the history of the Holocaust.

Two distinguished Uruguayan professionals were selected to participate in the 2005 program that took place the week of July 24-30, Ademas Cordones, director of the Centro Regional de Profesores del Suroeste in Colonia, and Raquel Katzkowicz, director of Instituto Ariel Hebreo Uruguayo in Montevideo. The Houston Holocaust Museum was the host institution for the two Uruguayan participants.
