Children from several
public schools in Uruguay were treated to a series of concerts
tailored just for them at the Movie Center Theatre in Montevideo.
Under the direction of conductor
Federico Garcia Vigil, the Filarmonica of Montevideo played
theme songs from cartoons, fairy tails and characters loved
by children, including Pinocchio, the Pink Panther and Tom
and Jerry. The concerts ran for three days (Nov. 12, 13
and 14), giving children the opportunity to appreciate classical
music and enjoy their favorite characters as they came to
life on stage.
The concert series was
sponsored by the U.S. Embassy, Montevideo, and was organized
by the Fulbright Commission as part of its educational exchange
program. The directors of many of the schools attending
the concert had visited the U.S. in 2002 and 2003 under
this program. During their visits, the directors were able
to exchange information with school officials in the U.S.

Affairs Officer Brian Penn introduces the orchestra.
