Western Hemisphere Affairs official Mike Matera visits Uruguay
The Director for the Office of
Brazil and Southern Cone Affairs completes extensive two-day
visit

Michael Matera, Director for the Office
of Brazil and Southern Cone Affairs (BSC), arrived in Montevideo
yesterday to complete a series of meetings which began with
a courtesy call on U.S. Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein.
During yesterday's busy schedule, Matera held meetings with
the acting Minister of Finance, Mario Bergara, with Mercosur
Director, Reginaldo Braga Arcuri, and with Deputy Foreign
Minister, Belela Herrera.
Today's schedule included a roundtable with
business sector representatives Federico Garcia Brum (Board
Member, Uruguayan Rural Association), Victor Angenscheidt
(Executive Director, Uruguay XXI), Roberto Bennett (General
Manager, Uruguay XXI), Ricardo Seizer (President, Chamber
of Commerce and Exports of Agriproducts and Agroindustrial
Products), Daniel Ferrere (Vice-President, American Chamber
of Commerce), Miguel Vilariño (Deputy General Manager,
Chamber of Industries), Cesar Bourdiel (Chamber of Industries),
Mario Bernarconi (Commercial Manager, LATU), and Claudio
Piacenza (Manager, National Chamber of Commerce and Services),
immediately followed by a meeting with the Secretary General
to the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI), Didier
Opertti.
In wrapping up the visit, Matera also met
today with the members of the Chamber of Deputies, Foreign
Relations Commission, Silvana Charlone (President), Daniel
Peña (Vice-President), Washington Abdala, Ruben Martinez
Huelmo, Enrique Pintado, and Jaime Trobo.
Matera has been Director for the BSC since
August 30, 2004. Prior to assuming this position, he was
Political Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires,
Argentina for four years.
