The US Embassy organized two conferences with Richard Stein on “Enterprises, Technology Commercialization and Industrial Development” and “Lessons Learned in the Entrepreneurial Economy: What Works and What Doesn't?” on Aug. 26 and 27.

More than 70 people from the private and public sectors attended both events. The conferences were illustrated by several practical cases and followed by challenging Q&A sessions.

During the “Enterprises, Technology Commercialization and Industrial Development” conference, which was held at the Sheraton Hotel, Stein addressed several factors that are key to the successful commercialization of high tech. He also elaborated on fundamentals of industrial development, such as an effective linkage between the private, academic and government sectors and the development of industrial clusters.

The “Lessons Learned” conference, held at the Radisson Victoria Hotel and co-sponsored by Endeavor Uruguay, focused on the common traits of the successful entrepreneurial mindset, the stages and dynamics of the firms’ business life cycles, the importance of networking and the co-opetition concept (cooperation and competition among private firms).

Stein holds degrees from the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania, and the London School of Economics. Prior to founding KLIOS, Inc in 2000, he was vice president for research at Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania; vice president and Economist - CoreStates Financial Corp (now Wachovia Corp) and senior economist and consulting manager at Wharton Econometric Forecasting Associates. Stein has broad management and leadership experience in a wide range of industries and technologies, including quantitative decision support, entrepreneurial business strategy and economic and policy analysis. He has been actively involved in the marketing strategy and the development/commercialization of technology and new products. Stein has also worked in the venture capital community; banking, environmental, life sciences and transportation sectors.
