Six members of the Youth Pride Program
in Uruguay have been selected to attend this year's annual
Pride World Drug Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, which will
take place April 6 to 9.
Sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Montevideo and the Pride
Youth Program organization in Fremont, Michigan, the group
consists of two directors of the Pride Youth Program in
Uruguay, Graciela Cartesio and Leonor Fierro, and four young
students between 15 and 20 years of age, selected on the
basis of their leadership skills helping others to be drug-free.

from Universidad Católica both work on the program
at the San Pedro parish in Buceo, Ramiro Ribeiro (High School
No. 57) works at "Centro de Acción Promocional
18 de Julio", and Valeria Madrid (Colegio América),
works in her own high school.
Pride (Parents' Resource Institute for Drug Education)
has been a leader in the drug prevention field with innovative
programs that encourage youth to take the lead in drug and
violence prevention. Founded in 1977, the program began
as a parents organization and went on to expand its base
to serve youth.
The Pride programs have earned an international
reputation for excellence and reliability as providers of
prevention services in the area of alcohol and other drugs
and proven successful in reducing drug use. More than 6,400
school systems in the U.S. rely on Pride Questionnaires
to monitor student drug use and violence. More than six
million youth have participated nationwide. Parents, adults
and community members offer guidance and support to serious
teams of youth dedicated to making a difference.
Each year, Pride Youth Programs welcomes
the world to this fun-filled, educational conference for
youth and adults. The Pride Conference provides a forum
and ideas for hundreds of organizations-large and small,
local, national, and international-that are fighting against
drugs. They listen to their peers who have done extraordinary
things to change their communities. Participants will hear
more than 100 experts on more than 20 topics related to
drug and violence prevention.
