A
monument of former U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt
(FDR), located on a small piece of land across from the
U.S. Ambassador's residence, is in disrepair, and the U.S.
Embassy is looking to restore it. The bronze statue, sculpted
by Edmundo Pratti in 1955 in the Casting Workshop Vignali,
needs a professional cleaning as well as the replacement
of bronze letters and stars in its inscription.
The original text, according
to historical documents, is translated as: "The Uruguayan
people to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the giant invalid,
promoter, spirit, nerve and the arm of democracy in war
and peace. 1956." The message is currently illegible.
Architect Fernando Fabiano, who designed the new park in
front of the Embassy, recommended covering the old letters
with a plaque.
The Embassy has petitioned some
FDR foundations in the U.S. to help fund the project.
