Organized by the School of Humanities
of the University of the Republic, and co-sponsored by the
National Museum of Fine Arts, a seminar on Dickens in Latin
America was held in Montevideo June 23-25, 2003. The seminar
included the participation of distinguished professors and
writers from Uruguay, Argentina, France, the U.K. and the
United States. U.S. Professor Michael Timko spoke on Dickens
and the Idea of Hearth and Home. Professor Timpo is the
editor of the Dickens Studies Annual, founded in 1970, the
centennial anniversary of Dickens's death, and published
since 1980 by AMS Press in cooperation with the Ph.D Program
in English of the City University of New York, and in association
with the Graduate School and University Center, CUNY, and
Queens College, CUNY
