U.S. Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein hosted an event today celebrating the International Education Week (Nov. 15 - 19), welcoming a variety of guests from the public education sectors as well as representatives of the cultural community.

The spirit of the International Education Week is to highlight the importance of international education, particularly through exchange programs.

Ambassador Silverstein pointed out "over 200 participants from around the world, in Department of State-sponsored exchange programs, have become heads of state.” He underlined the Embassy´s commitment to promoting educational exchange with Uruguay that includes students and teachers throughout the entire year, and added that the exchange programs "are an essential tool that advance understanding between our nations".

As part of the event, Ambassador Silverstein presented a donation of educational material, including books and multimedia publications, for public schools offering the state-sponsored English Immersion Program. Dr. Roberto Scarsi, Vice President of the National Administration of Public Education, received the donation.

A number of computers were also donated to the public university 'Universidad de la República', specifically the department of International Politics and External Affairs of the School of Social Science, and to the department of Modern Literature of the School of Humanities.

A cash donation made directly by the Embassy was also presented by Ambassador Silverstein to the education sector in support of a group of students of the University of Montevideo who will be participating in the Philip J. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, next march in Washington. Dr. Guillermo Rosati, Academic Director of the School of Law, received the donation.

REMARKS BY AMBASSADOR MARTIN J. SILVERSTEIN

Good morning:

Every year, around the world, future leaders in science, literature, government and business participate in public and private exchange programs. These ventures build mutual understanding and lasting bonds; and help instill the skills needed to develop leaders with a broad world vision and a compassion for other cultures.

We are proud of the fact that over 200 participants from around the world, in Department of State-sponsored exchange programs, have become heads of state.

This Embassy is committed to promoting educational exchange with Uruguay throughout the entire year. Exchange programs that include students and professors are an essential tool that advance understanding between our nations.

I want to thank each one of you for your participation and dedication to the success of our joint programs.
