Posted: November 12, 2004

U.S. Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein met Wednesday with President-elect Tabare Vazquez.

Speaking with members of the press after the 90 minute private meeting, Ambassador Silverstein reaffirmed that bilateral relations between the United States and Uruguay would remain excellent. When asked by reporters about future financial aid to Uruguay, Ambassador Silverstein stated that Uruguay's economy is on a sounder footing therefore he does not foresee any need for assistance such as the one granted during the 2001 financial crisis. On the matter regarding the new government's announcement to re-establish diplomatic relations with Cuba, the Ambassador stated that Uruguay is a sovereign country and has the right to decide its own international affairs.
