The Honorable Michael Chertoff, former
Assistant Attorney General, Criminal Division United States
Department of Justice, arrived yesterday for a three day visit
which kicked off with a presentation given today to young
lawyers attending a course on Methodology at the School of
Law of the University of the Republic. Faculty from the School
of Social Sciences of the University of Montevideo and the
Catholic University also attended.
Judge Chertoff is scheduled to visit the
Uruguayan Judges Association where he will conduct a presentation
and Q&A period with members of the Board of Directors
of the association. He will also visit the Ministry of Education
and Culture to meet with Minister Jose Amorin and Principal
Prosecutor Dr. Marcelo Brovia.
On Wednesday, Judge Chertoff will visit
the Uruguayan Supreme Court and meet with the Honourable
Leslie Van Rompaey, President of the Supreme Court of Justice.
The
Honourable Michael Chertoff has been a Judge on the United
States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit since June
2003.
From June 2001 until June 2003, he was Assistant
Attorney General for the Criminal Division at the U.S. Department
of Justice, where he directed the national prosecution effort
against terrorism, as well as major prosecutions of corporate
fraud, such as the Enron cases.
From 1983-1990, Judge Chertoff was a federal
prosecutor in New York City and New Jersey, and from 1990-1994,
he served as United States Attorney for New Jersey.
From 1994-2001, he was a partner at the
law firm of Latham & Watkins.
Judge Chertoff is a magna cum laude graduate
of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, and a former
law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan,
Jr. and to Judge Murray Gurfein of the Second Circuit.
