A reception was held yesterday at the U.S.
Ambassador's Residence in support of the Uruguayan NGO "Centro
de Promoción por la Dignidad Humana" or Center
for the Promotion of Human Dignity (CeProDiH).

Audrey Silverstein, Adriana Abraham
(director of CeProDiH),
Marcelo Laborde (president of CeProDiH), and
Martin J. Silverstein (U.S. Ambassador) greet invited
guests
in the reception area of the Residence. |
Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein and
his wife, Mrs. Audrey Silverstein, hosted a group of local
business people and friends, who pledged their support for
this important social assistance organization.
Mr. Silverstein eagerly promotes and supports
the work that Center does with the elderly, children, and
especially with women in precarious situations, most of
whom are single mothers, often victims of spousal abuse
or abandonment, and are unprepared to fend for themselves.
The main objective is to bring these people off the streets
and back on their feet. They receive food and shelter, and
an educational program designed to facilitate their reinsertion
in the labor force, allowing them to become self-sufficient.
The Center runs a shelter for mothers and children in the
city core and offers vital support to institutions like
the INAME -a government agency responsible for the protection
of minors- ensuring that unless by her own choice, no helpless
mother and her child should live on the street.
CeProDiH's budget is facing severe challenges.
It is hoped that through campaigns like the one Mrs. Silverstein
is promoting, the Center may be able to maintain the level
of assistance it has been offering for the past several
years. By getting local entrepreneurs involved in the project,
the people who run the Center intend to stimulate the concept
of Social Responsibility that many businesses and organizations
are including in their agendas.
