The
United States Embassy in Montevideo hosted yesterday a group
of Uruguayan ethics experts in a multinational videoconference
addressing illicit enrichment.
Six countries from all over North and South
America took part in the discussion. Though made possible
by the U.S. Department of State, Argentina and Brazil took
a leading role in the event. Participating countries aimed
at opening a dialog addressing the most effective ways to
deter, identify, and prosecute illicit enrichment.
The Uruguayan participants, Dr. Carlos Balsa,
Dr. Eduardo Piaggio, Sr. Jorge Sambarino, and Dr. José
Luis Robatto, were representatives from the Junta Asesora
en Materia Economica Financiera del Estado. Their involvement
in the one and a half hour conference was very well received
as participants outlined current problems regarding corruption
and discussed different methods in handling the problem.
The highly technical videoconference was
extremely informative, serving as a base for future discussions
on combating illicit enrichment.
