Fallen Veterans Remembered

Victims of terrorism and their families also remembered in Veterans Day service

Posted: November 13, 2006 Related material: On Veterans Day we honor all who served the cause of freedom

British, Canadian, French and U.S. officials, along with members of the Uruguayan branch of the Royal British Legion, families and friends gathered to pay tribute to fallen veterans who served the cause of freedom throughout modern history at a Veterans Day ceremony held in Montevideo's British Cemetery on Saturday, November 11, 2006.

In rendering homage to those who paid the highest sacrifice, British Ambassador Hugh Salvesen read a poem by Lt. Col. John McCrae written in 1915 following the terrible battle in the Ypres, while he was resting at a nearby cemetery where he saw a field of wild poppies growing between the rows of crosses.

Following the ceremony, Ambassador Salvesen, U.S. Chargé D'Affaires James Nealon and Canadian Ambassador Patricia Fuller joined French Chargé D'Affaires Bernard Maizeret at Montevideo's Cementerio Central to honor fallen French soldiers buried there.

On Sunday, the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Montevideo held a Remembrance Day service. In remembering those who lived and died in the service of others, Dean Bruce Addison also remembered those who "died during the past year in terrible acts of terrorism." He added, "we give thanks for their lives and we hold them in our prayers along with all who mourn their deaths; for all who are rebuilding their lives; and for those who shared, often at great cost to themselves, in the work of rescue and rehabilitation."
