English immersion program.

September 20 - 24

September 22, 2004

Seminar organizers Prof. Gabriel Diaz Maggioli, Coordinator for the Bilingual Education Program of the Uruguayan Public School System,
and Ady Marrero, Academic Director of the
U.S.-Uruguay Binational Center.

The U.S.-Uruguay Binational Center Alianza Cultural Uruguay-Estados Unidos de América, is conducting a special 40-hour training seminar in order to prepare public school teachers for an English immersion program that the Uruguayan Public Education Administration (ANEP) is implementing throughout the country.

The seminar was developed by the Alianza's teaching staff with the assistance of the U.S. Embassy in Montevideo. The Embassy provided funding which enabled more than 50 public school teachers from all over the country to attend the seminar during their spring break, and to assist them with their living expenses while in Montevideo.

The seminar objectives are to develop fluent and correct verbal skills through practical application of the English language, and to increase the teachers' cultural base by discussing topics such as American music, movies, sports, history, and literature. The seminar also aims at improving a variety of gramatical skills and lexical comprehension.
