Ambassador
Martin J. Silverstein hosted a farewell reception for Mary
Wilson Tuesday night (Oct. 7) at his residence.
Representatives of the music industry and
many of the participants from the workshop held earlier
in the day came out to speak with Ms. Wilson on the final
day of her tour of Uruguay as Cultural Ambassador. Ms. Wilson’s
four-day tour was organized by the U.S. Embassy, Montevideo,
under the auspices of CultureConnect, an initiative of the
U.S. Department of State.
“Everyone loved the Supremes,”
said Ambassador Silverstein. “They truly did music
that made us laugh and made us cry…I can’t even
imagine how you must feel bringing such an incredible amount
of joy to so many people. If you do nothing else for the
rest of your life, you know that you have brought so much
joy to so many people.”
Ms. Wilson said, “I want to say on
behalf of CultureConnect, I’m really very honored
to be one of those chosen to come out and visit people around
the world and share our musical heritage. Music to me is
universal…I had the honor of seeing young musicians,
and singers today. I was very honored to have them share
their music with me.”
Turning to the students grouped nearby, Ms.
Wilson said, “I wish you all a lot of success and
remember, no one said it was easy.”
During the course of the evening Julio Frade,
professional musican, and Pancho Nole, pianist, lead the
crowd to sing tango songs.
Ms. Wilson sang, “I Believe,”
and then asked the crowd to join her in singing the Supremes’
hit song, “You Can’t Hurry Love.”
