Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein stresses importance of Uruguayan President Batlle’s role in opening doors for the Uruguayan business community in Miami and Puerto Rico

September, 2003

Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein hosted a coffee morning for about 40 representatives of the Uruguayan business community who will be accompanying President Batlle to Miami and Puerto Rico during the week of Sept. 15. Ambassador Silverstein also plans to accompany President Batlle to the U.S.

The Ambassador stressed the value of having President Batlle lead this trade delegation. He stated this will not only open doors for the Uruguayan business community into the U.S., but will guarantee that those businesses will put the welcome sign out. He added that the U.S. Embassy commercial section’s services are available to those seeking to do business in the U.S. and that the U.S. wants to play a role in Uruguay’s return to economic stability.

President Batlle’s trip is important because he will help create a link between the U.S. and a variety of Uruguayan businesses participating from the fields of software, information services, shipping, fishing, meat and pork products, the Ambassador said. Representatives of the wine and tourism industries are also traveling with the president.

Even if only one person in Uruguay acquired a job as a result of this trip, it would still be considered a success, the Ambassador noted.
