Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein, accompanied by Montevideo
Intendente Mariano Arana, walked through an exhibit of Sept.
11 posters at the Intendencia Thursday (Sept. 11). Earlier
in the day, the Ambassador visited the Prado fair, where
posters from the exhibit were also on display.
The posters, commissioned by
the U.S. Embassy, depict the front pages of newspapers from
all over the world on the day after the Sept. 11, 2001,
attacks on New York and Washington DC. Twenty-two posters
were exhibited at the Intendencia Sept. 11 and 12. Twenty-six
more are on display on the main level of Montevideo Shopping
through Sept. 18. And two more were at the at the U.S. Embassy
booth at the Prado fair Sept. 11.
While viewing the posters, the
Ambassador said this year Sept. 11 passed as "an incredibly
solemn day, not just for the United States but for the entire
world."
“Mostly, communities are
taking a moment to just stop and pause and reflect on the
moment," Ambassador Silverstein said. "But most
important, it’s an opportunity when reflecting, to
renew our commitment to fight terrorism around the world.
Every country, every location, every city has a way to participate
in that fight. One way that can be done
in this region, is by making certain that funds are not
able to reach terrorist groups or to fund illegal activities.”
Intendente Arana noted that the exhibit
is intended "to document what we had the sad privilege
of seeing in an almost instantaneous manner through the
media two years ago. It allowed us to visualize the horrendous
results of terrorism and fanaticism and all that is opposed
to the peaceful existence we have always supported."
