U.S. Embassy representatives, including Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein, joined school officials, teachers, parents and students to celebrate the opening of the new computer lab at the Martin Luther King school on Thursday (Nov. 13).

The Public Affairs department of the U.S. Embassy Public Affairs arranged for the construction of the new lab with donations from companies sponsoring this year’s July 4 celebrations. The funds were used to buy building materials and paint. And Citibank donated eight computers.

U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Officer Brian Penn said donations came from 43 companies, including Kraft, Coca-Cola, Berlitz and Herman Miller. The embassy also donated books about the U.S. to the school.

The construction and painting was done by volunteers from the embassy and sailors from the USS Robert Bradley, a Navy ship that pulled into the Port of Montevideo Oct. 30 to Nov. 2. Penn presented to School Director Carmen Lopez a plaque from the sailors to commemorate their community service project in Montevideo.

Ms. Lopez said the public school was named after Martin Luther King two years ago in honor of the U.S. civil rights leader. Like King, Ms. Lopez said, the school community was able to “realize one of its dreams,” thanks to the U.S. Embassy.

“We can say now we have a computer lab and it will permit us to give the children of Casavalle, our students, a quality education,” Ms. Lopez said.

After the presentations, children from several classes performed dances, songs and skits. Ms. Lopez, Ambassador Silverstein and Citibank representative Sergio Pereira cut the ribbon at the entrance to the new computer lab.
