US Assistant Secretary for Western Hemispheric Affairs Roger F. Noriega concluded his trip to Uruguay Monday, the first part of his Latin America visit which also includes Argentina and Paraguay.

Together with US Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein, Noriega had lunch with President Jorge Battle at the Presidential Residence, Suárez Avenue.

Earlier Monday, he met Esc. Guillermo Stirling, Minister of the Interior, Dr. Alejandro Atchugarry, Minister of Economy, and Dr. Didier Opertti, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In the afternoon, Noriega spoke with leftist coalition leader, Dr. Tabaré Vázquez, and former presidents Dr. Luis A. Lacalle and Dr. Julio María Sanguinetti.

Noriega ' s agenda also held a town hall meeting with US Embassy staff, attended dinner with members of the Uruguayan business community and visited the Legislative Palace.

During his meetings Assistant Secretary Noriega discussed a vast array of bilateral and hemispheric issues. He pointed out that relations between the United States and Uruguay are very important and that his government is interested in continuing to cooperate with Uruguay.

In addition he commented, " Opportunities abound in the Americas... to consolidate a community of friendly nations that share a common commitment to democracy, free enterprise and broad-based economic growth. "
