A shipment of diapers, toys, clothing, beds, cribs and mattresses, was delivered today to a shelter for the homeless run by the Center for the Promotion of Human Dignity (CeProDiH - Centro de Promoción por la Dignidad Humana).

The supplies were donated by the First Redeemer Church of Atlanta, Georgia, through Operation Mobilization (OM), an international Christian NGO that works in more than 100 countries. The US Embassy facilitated transportation and port clearance of the shipment consisting of two containers totaling over 15 metric tons destined to about 50 help organizations in the country.

Mrs. Audrey Silverstein, wife of U.S. Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein, along with Siegfried Klassen, director of OM Uruguay, and Mr. Tom Brown from Atlanta, visited the shelter where they were greeted by nearly 100 residents, mainly single mothers and children who are currently in the shelter under Plan Invierno (Winter Plan), a plan intended to keep homeless families off the street particularly during the cold season.

Ms. Adriana Abraham, director of CeProDiH outlined the importance of these donations as the center works to help these women become self-sufficient.

Mrs. Silverstein brought the women's center to the attention of the U.S. Embassy community after a visit with U.S. Undersecretary for Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky last year.

This much-needed delivery is another step in the series of donations already made by the American people to the Uruguayan community.
