A native of Teaneck and Hoboken, New Jersey Robert Zimmerman obtained his BA and JD degrees from public schools in Maryland during the 1980s and worked as a lawyer for public interest organizations until he joined USIA in 1993.

Robert served as a USIA junior officer trainee in Paris and as Cultural Affairs Officer in Yaounde, Cameroon until 1996, before transferring to the State Department in 1996.

He was a vice consul in Haiti and Buenos Aires from 1996 - 2000; served in the IO bureau from 2001-02; and was WHA's deputy spokesman from 2002-05. Robert recently completed a two-year tour as an Assistant Press Officer in Mexico City.

He is married to Mariela K. Farhi-Zimmerman.
