Political/Economic/Commercial Section

The Political/Economic/Commercial Section reports on political, economic and commercial developments in Uruguay and works to promote U.S. interests in those areas. The Political/Economic/Commercial Section is involved in many of the areas in which the United States and Uruguay work together to mutual benefit, including:

  • Economic Section. This branch deals with a wide range of economic, trade & financial issues at domestic, regional and international levels. It periodically produces -- in cooperation with the Commercial Section -- publicly available reports including the Country Commercial Guide, the Investment Climate Statement and the Trade Act Report (click here to access these reports). It also prepares spot reports on issues of interest to US entrepreneurs and policy makers.
  • Environmental Issues. Among other activities, we work on the establishment of linkages between U.S. institutions and the U.S. Government, and their Uruguayan counterparts, on global issues. We also represent the United States on local Board of the Fondo de las Americas, a program designed to provide small grants to NGOs working in the protection, preservation, and management of Uruguay's natural and biological resources, as well as in the promotion of child development in Uruguay.
  • Science & Technology cooperation. We facilitate visits by U.S. experts in many fields, particularly in the area of agriculture, arrange the visits of Uruguayan scientists to the U.S., and help to arrange research grants between academic institutions from both countries. The Embassy is also active in connection to the implementation of the GLOBE Program in Uruguay.
  • Biotechnology. We promote the establishment of a broad range of contacts between the U.S. and Uruguay in biotech related issues.
  • Health. The Embassy has an active role in the development and follow-up of health related projects and programs in Uruguay.
  • Mutual security and military cooperation. Among other activities, we provide policy advice for our mutual program of military training and assistance.
  • The spread of democratic values and respect for human rights. In addition to working on the annual human rights report, we also seek to cooperate with Uruguay in the promotion of human rights and democracy elsewhere in the world.
  • Legislative exchanges. The Embassy promotes the exchange of information on legislative processes and practices between the Uruguayan National Legislature and the United States Congress.
  • International peacekeeping and humanitarian missions. The United States strongly supports Uruguay's leading role in international peacekeeping.
  • The fight against international organized crime, terrorism, and narcotics trafficking and consumption. The United States maintains a modest program of assistance in training and equipment for counternarcotics programs.
