Acting Assistant Secretary
of State for Hemispheric Affairs Curtis Struble visited
Uruguay November 15, 2002, for high level meetings with
Uruguayan government and private sector leaders.
Accompanied by U.S. Ambassador to Uruguay
Martin J. Silverstein, he met with Minister of Economy and
Finance Alejandro Atchugarry and Central Bank President
Julio DeBrun to discuss recent economic and financial developments
in Uruguay
Acting Assistant Secretary Struble’s
discussions with Acting President Luis Hierro and Acting
Foreign Minister Guillermo Valles focused on regional and
multilateral issues and free trade, particularly the Free
Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). Access to the U.S. market
for Uruguayan beef and citrus products was discussed.
Meetings with Uruguayan congressmen
and business leaders led to a wide range of discussions
of bilateral U.S.-Uruguayan interests.
