Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein visited the departments (states)
of Rivera and Tacuarembó June 5, 2002, on his first
official visit outside the capital city of Montevideo.
During the two-day trip, the U.S. representative met with
the Mayor of Rivera, Prof. Tabaré Viera and the Mayor
of Tacuarembó, Dr. Eber Da Rosa, participating with
them in an intense agenda.
In Rivera, Ambassador Silverstein visited the Municipality
where Mayor Tabaré Viera greeted him. The Ambassador
and Mayor discussed issues of mutual interest, after which
Ambassador Silverstein visited the local hospital, the local
branch of the Alianza Cultural Uruguay-Estados Unidos and
Public School No. 64. The director of this school was one
of the participants in an exchange program for school principals
carried out by the Fulbright Commission in Uruguay. In addition,
he visited the plant of Colonvade-Weyerhauser (lumber business).
The official visit continued at the city of Tacuarembó
where he met with Mayor Eber Da Rosa with whom he had an extensive
discussion on topics of interest for both countries. After
this interview, Ambassador Silverstein visited the following
local government officials and institutions: General Tomás
Medina at the Army Division III, the National Institute of
Agricultural Investigation (INIA) headquarters, the local
public hospital and Public School No.13. This school principal
also participated in the exchange program for school principals
sponsored by the Fulbright Commission. Concluding his trip
Ambassador Silverstein participated in the opening ceremony
of a CAIF center (Children’s National Institute–Centro
del Instituto Nacional del Menor) built in large part with
funds from the Fund of the Americas.
