Remarks and Speeches by U.S. Ambassador to Uruguay Martin J. Silverstein
DONATION OF MEDICAL SUPPLIES AND VACCINES TO THE MINISTRY OF PUBLIC HEALTH
April 10, 2003

AMBASSADOR MARTIN J. SILVERTEIN’S SPEECH

Minister Bonilla, honored guests:
Today we do not meet to acknowledge a unique moment in Uruguay-USA relations, but rather to recognize a continuing affirmation of our special friendship.

Through a public and private partnership, nearly $4 million dollars in medical supplies and equipment have been donated by the people of the US to the people of Uruguay. These medicines, vaccines and equipment will change lives and save lives.

Whose lives will they change?
A teenager playing football on a summer afternoon,
A beautiful bride dancing with her father on her wedding day,
A grandmother holding her grandchild on her lap.
And you know what?
They will never know that those of you standing here had a profound impact on their lives.
But you and I know it, and that is enough.
The Talmud says, if you save one life it is as if you saved the whole world.

My sincere thanks to
US Congressman Cass Ballenger of North Carolina
Project Cure and Dr. Jim Jackson,
The US Department of Defense,
The Church of Jesus Christ of the Later Day Saints,
Wyeth Laboratories of Radnor, PA,
Federal Express and
United Airlines for their selfless efforts.

These life saving donations will not stop here. This is the first chapter of a continuing effort to answer the call of those in need and help the citizens of Uruguay stay on the road to recovery.

Thank you.
