Remarks
and Speeches by U.S. Ambassador to Uruguay Martin J. Silverstein
STATEMENT BY UNITED STATES AMBASSADOR MARTIN J. SILVERSTEIN
ON
THE OCCASION OF THE 226TH ANNIVERSARY OF U.S. INDEPENDENCE
July 4, 2002 |
ESPAÑOL |
Today,
the 4th of July of 2002, we celebrate a new anniversary of
the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.
Two hundred and twenty-six years have passed since that historical
date and the United States keeps maintaining the ideals that
inspired our Founding Fathers. A deep concept of freedom,
respect for individual rights and liberties that our fellow
citizens have affirmed and defended once and again, and that
are permanently secured with the guarantee that “we
the people” remain truly in charge.
Looking back over more than two centuries, we still regard
with admiration the courage and vision of our Nations’
founders. They conceived a democracy sufficiently strong as
to last through the years, yet sufficiently flexible to face
new challenges and give reality to new dreams.
The 4th of July is for Americans as the 25th of August is
for Uruguayans: the reaffirmation of who we are and the remembrance
of the principles that guided our nation.
This is my first 4th of July in Montevideo as U.S. Ambassador.
I am pleased and honored to be able to share it with the citizens
of another democracy, at a time when the bilateral relationship
and the future outlook are excellent. We maintain a continued
cooperation with Uruguay and a constant exchange in a vast
variety of areas, seeking the best for both countries. In
addition, however, Uruguay leads –beyond any doubt–
the process that will lead us to have an economically and
democratically integrated and consolidated America.
Today, in this new anniversary of the U.S. Independence and
on such a special day for all Americans, I wish to express
my hope for the progress and prosperity of Uruguay.
Thank you.
