TO THE MINISTRY OF PUBLIC HEALTH
Donation for U$S550.000 December
3, 2002
Following the official delivery of a donation
of medical equipment and supplies to the Uruguayan Minister
of Public Health, Dr. Alfonso Varela, the U.S. Ambassador
to Uruguay, Martin J. Silverstein, remarked that “the
United States is confident in the Uruguayan people and their
leadership as well as in their capacity to recover and return
to full productivity”.
This delivery is the second in a series of planned donations
of medical supplies, medicine and equipment from various
sources in the United States. This shipment, consisting
of $550,000 USD worth of medical supplies, is a donation
of the Department of Defense, Southern Command, approved
by General James T. Hill, who recently visited Uruguay in
October of 2002. The shipment consists of hundreds of items
including: portable incubators for new born babies, a doppler
ultrasound kit, examination tables, surgical equipment,
laboratory equipment and basic items such a syringes, bandages,
sutures and gloves.
On this occasion the U.S. Ambassador declared:
“This is the first in a series of various shipments
of supplies, medical equipment and medicines delivered from
the people of the United States to the people of Uruguay.
I am here today to thank the people of Uruguay, not to be
thanked. We are happy to be friends and allies. Friends
let their friends help them. By letting us respond to your
request for assistance you have vividly expressed our unbreakable
friendship.
The present economic challenges are temporary. The United
States of America is confident in the Uruguayan people and
their leadership as well as in their capacity to recover
and return to full productivity.
Let’s continue working together for the good of our
people and citizens of the world. As General Artigas said:
“The needs of the people should not delay.”
The Ministry of Public Health will deliver this material
to different hospitals throughout the country. The Embassy
of the United States as well as the Ministry are developing
a series of programs to carry out new donations of medical
supplies and medicine in the course of the coming year."
