Audrey
J. Silverstein earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics
from the University of Pennsylvania in 1982 and a Juris
Doctor degree from the Villanova University School of Law
in 1985 where she was a member of Moot Court Board. She
is a member of the Bars of Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
In her professional career, she served in
1983 as an Intern to Hon. James Hunter III, U.S. Court of
Appeals for the Third Circuit and later served as a Deputy
Attorney General in Pennsylvania, litigation division from
1986 to 1987. Since 1987, Mrs. Silverstein has been a full
time mother and worked as an attorney in private practice.
Mrs. Silverstein currently serves as President
of the American Women’s Club of Montevideo, Uruguay,
and as Honorary President of the British Hospital Guild,
Montevideo. She remains active with her alma mater, University
of Pennsylvania.
As the wife of the US Ambassador to Uruguay,
Mrs. Silverstein regularly co-hosts senior US Congressional
and Administration visitors and participates almost daily
in diplomatic functions. She serves as the counter-part
to the First Lady of Uruguay at charity events and diplomatic
gatherings involving the United States and Uruguay. Mrs.
Silverstein frequently travels throughout Uruguay, representing
the US government in visiting local officials, hospitals,
schools and institutions. Also, she actively engages at
Embassy planning meetings, organizing large-scale activities
such as the American Independence Day receptions and dinners
involving nearly one thousand dignitaries.
Mrs. Silverstein is an active supporter
of numerous charities including Pereira Rossell, a public
pediatric hospital; Todos Por Uruguay, an organization promoting
aspiring artists and musicians; AUPI, an association that
provides food kitchens and schools for underprivileged children;
CEPRODIH, a women and children’s shelter and life-training
center; and Casa de los Ninos, a center for sexually abused
children. Much of Mrs. Silverstein’s public work is
featured in Uruguayan newspapers and magazines. Additionally,
she provides a welcome smile to the many patients she anonymously
visits every week in the public hospitals and geriatric
centers.
Assistant Secretary of State Roger Noriega
recognized Mrs. Silverstein’s humanitarian contributions
by awarding her with the Department of State Certificate
of Appreciation. The US Embassy Montevideo also presented
Mrs. Silverstein with The Florence Nightingale Award for
her work with charitable organizations.
Mrs. Silverstein has
six children, ages 6 to 17.
