Ambassador Baxter: “The scholars and educators who
earn Fulbright Scholarship Program travel and research grants
will lead our two countries into the future. These investments
in education and teacher exchanges ensure that our most valuable
resource – Uruguayan and American young people – can
realize the potential of their countries, and themselves.”
In recognition of its success and very hard work,
U.S. Ambassador Frank Baxter extended his congratulations to Uruguay’s
Fulbright Commission on the occasion of its end-of-the-year board
meeting here tomorrow.
“’Spectacular’ is how I describe the range
of Fulbright funded scholarship programs in Uruguay. Uruguayan
and American academics and experts are working here and in the
United States on projects ranging from organic farming to environmental
studies, engineering, rock & roll, and Uruguayan perceptions
of the United States,” said Ambassador Baxter.
“Sixty-four Uruguayan scholars and educators have participated
in Fulbright exchanges in 2007, and 66 Americans came to Uruguay
during that same period on similar programs. Most Fulbright exchanges
involved educators who visited our respective countries for short,
three-week periods, though some scholars are pursuing graduate
and advanced research projects that will take several years to
complete,” he added.
Ambassador Baxter said he hopes to see all U.S.-Uruguayan exchange
programs grow, to enable students and young people from both countries
prepare for the employment and research opportunities of the future.
