Admiral James Stavridis, the Commander of American
military forces headquartered in the U.S. state of Florida, will
visit Uruguay to hold meetings with senior government and military
officials. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Admiral
Stavridis enjoys the opportunity to meet with naval academy students
and graduates from other countries. He is honored to have been
invited to attend celebrations marking the one hundred-year anniversary
of Uruguay’s naval academy.
Admiral Stavridis will have the opportunity to commend Uruguay
for its substantial contribution to the keeping of peace in Haiti
and elsewhere, when he visits the ENOPU, Uruguay’s national
school for peacekeeping. The Admiral will also meet Minister of
Defense Azucena Berrutti and the service chiefs of Uruguay’s
armed forces.
In making the announcement of the visit, U.S. Ambassador Frank
E. Baxter stated, “the visit of a high-level defense official,
such as Admiral James Stavridis, shows that the Uruguayan-U.S.
bilateral relationship is advancing to a level that permits us
to seek out each others views and work together on key humanitarian
and other issues.”
In order to receive a complete perspective of Uruguay’s
commitment to good governance, Admiral Stavridis will visit the
Parliament building to meet with the Senate and House Defense
Commissions. The Admiral looks forward to discussing security
cooperation and the opportunities for our two partner countries
to work together.
Before leaving Uruguay, Admiral Stavridis will present a plaque
to the naval supply ship ROU Artigas, commemorating Uruguay’s
first-ever participation in PANAMAX 07.
