Contest engages people worldwide in global dialogue on democracy

Posted: June 16, 2009 Upcoming event: Democracy Video Challenge Winners Will Discuss Their Films
Today, the U.S. Department of State and its partners announced the results of the Democracy Video Challenge, a worldwide online competition that engages people around the world in a global dialogue on democracy. The six winners were selected by online public voting.

The challenge asked video makers to complete the phrase “Democracy is…” through three-minute videos posted on the competition’s YouTube site. More than 900 people from 95 countries answered the challenge. With over 900,000 global viewers, the online public picked the winning videos by voting for six of 18 finalists identified by an independent jury that was co-chaired by Hernando de Soto (president of the Institute for Liberty and Democracy) and Michael Apted (president of the Directors Guild of America).

From animated shorts to mini-documentaries, the winning videos captured the meaning of democracy in today’s world by incorporating thought-provoking creativity with thoughtful dialogue. The winners, hailing from various walks of life and different political regimes, are:

by Chansa Tembo (Zambia)
by Aissa Peñafiel (Phillipines)
by Lukasz Szozda (Poland)
by Rodin Hamidi (UAE)
by Tsering Choden (Nepal)
by Anna Christa dos Santos Israel (Brazil)
