On May 15, U.S. Chargé D'Affaires (CDA) Robin Matthewman
visited the city of Fray Bentos situated in the administrative
division (department) of Rio Negro in Uruguay's western frontier
region. The city has a population of nearly 23,000. Agriculture
is the main source of industry in the region, the most prominent
being wineries and dairies.
During the visit, CDA Matthewman met with Governor Omar
Lafluf to discuss matters of mutual interest and participated
in a press conference with local media. Later she visited
the municipal park Parque Roosevelt where she donated
a truckload of rose bushes and several benches. During the
ceremony, CDA Matthewman and Governor Lafluf symbolically
planted two rose bushes. The visit included a tour of the
city, the Museum of the Industrial Revolution and the LATU
laboratories located in the historical quarter where a British-owned
meatpacking plant, Frigorifico Anglo, used to operate
in the early 1900s. Matthewman also visited the Alianza
Binational Center of Fray Bentos and the local Emergency
Operations Center. The visit concluded with a luncheon hosted
by Governor Lafluf.
