On May 14, U.S. Chargé D'Affaires (CDA) Robin Matthewman
visited the city of Artigas situated in Uruguay's northern
frontier region, approximately 600 kilometers (373 miles)
from Montevideo. It has a population of nearly 42,000.
CDA Matthewman's visit began with a courtesy call on Artigas
Intendant Julio Cesar Silveira followed by a joint press
conference. Later, she visited a local public school where
a special program on dental hygiene is underway. The project
is sponsored by Uruguay's First Lady Maria Auxiliadora Delgado
de Vazquez and made possible with the support of the Uruguayan
government, various embassies and several private companies.
CDA Matthewman also visited the Hemingway Alianza Binational
Center where she spoke with several of the students enrolled
in English as a second language.
