On May 5, the United States Potato Board (USPB) organized, jointly with USDA FAS and DALINTOR (Uruguay importer of potatoes from the U.S.) a seminar named “Discovering U.S. Potato: New Varieties and Uses”

The purpose of the seminar was to promote and introduce new U.S. potato varieties to this market and providing a cooking demo on how to use them.

Approximately 100 participants including importers, growers, restaurant reps, technicians and government representatives participated in the event that was held in the Sheraton Hotel. The USPB trip also included a trip to visit different trials in the regions of San Jose, Tacuarembo, and Rocha.

In the past 5 years the importation of U.S. seed potato into Uruguay was increased from 2,600 bags in 2004-05 to almost 30,000 bags in 2008-09 ($53,000 in 2004 to $568,000 in 2008).

Robin Matthewman, U.S. Chargé D’Affaires in Montevideo gave the opening remarks at the seminar.
