The Secretary of State's Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat
Anti-Semitism, Gregg Rickman, arrived in Uruguay July 6 to
meet with local human rights groups and Jewish community leaders.
The July 6-7 visit was coordinated by the U.S. Embassy Montevideo
and included visits to the Holocaust Memorial and other Jewish
heritage sites, as well as meetings with the Ministry of Education's
Honorary Commission Against Racism, Xenophobia And All Forms
Of Discrimination, and the Mayor of Montevideo, Ricardo Ehrlich.
The Office of the Special Envoy To Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism
(SEAS) advocates U.S. policy on anti-Semitism both in the
U.S. and internationally. Anti-Semitism is discrimination
against or hatred toward Jews. SEAS develops and implements
policies and projects to support efforts to combat anti-Semitism
and welcomes information on anti-Semitic incidents, including
personal and property attacks; government policies, including
judicial/prosecutorial decisions and educational programs
on the issue; and press and mass media reports.
