Ambassador Baxter Visits Artigas and Rivera in Northern Uruguay

Meets with local government officials, tours industrial sites

Artigas is the northernmost municipality in Uruguay. The name Artigas comes from that of the national hero, Jose Gervasio Artigas. Its capital city, also named Artigas, is the furthest city from Uruguay's capital Montevideo, approximately 600 kilometers (373 miles) away. It has a population of nearly 42,000.

Top right: Ambassador Baxter and Intendant Silveira examine one of the world's largest amethyst rocks, found in Artigas. The ambassador and Mrs. Baxter also visited the mines where the rock was extracted from. Mining of semiprecious stone deposits is widespread in Artigas and the quality of its agates and amethysts is known around the world.
